“The Dalai Lama is turning 80 years old on July 6, but he doesn’t want any gifts. Instead, your social media presence is the present.

In honor of his milestone birthday, His Holiness is asking people to share photos, videos and quotes depicting people simply treating one another kindly, along with the hashtag #withcompassion on social accounts.”  (from Huffington Post )

“There’s so much you can rejoice in…..”

~

rejoice there's so much you can rejoice in

~

The term “rejoice” refers to generating and feeling a warm sense of happiness or celebration when we notice  happiness, compassion, kindness, generosity or a sense of well being in others or ourselves….isn’t that a wonderful word?…and a wonderful kind of celebration!

~

Some of my (Kathy’s) very favorite pages…. “rejoicing”

~

rejoice ideas from Easy Path book

~

A few days ago, I wanted to print out a few copies of one of these pages…to take to “Engaging with Life,” a class that nurtures, supports and encourages these ideas.

I was going to print out 2 or 3 color copies of that one page….BUT…the printer started printing out more and more copies of the page!…one after another after another!… and I couldn’t stop the printer!…it just kept printing until there were 15 copies of that one page!  Can you believe that???  The printer seemed to be doing it’s own kind of “rejoicing!”  I was standing there in awe of what had happened!

So, I took those many bright, colorful, happy pages to the class and shared them with others in the class…a shared celebration of a “rejoicing printer!”

~

rejoice in happiness of others

Here’s the page, below,  that just “kept on printing!”… a celebration by the printer!

This past weekend, I was rejoicing in the generosity of Gelek Rimpoche, as he was offering his time, energy, kindness and wisdom to those of us at a teaching with him at the Gyuto Center in California. (Gyuto Center is where I’ve heard inspiring teachings by Gyumed Khensur Lobsang Jampa Rinpoche, the author of  The Easy Path, the book that those “rejoice” quotations were actually from!  )   I’m also so thankful to Ven. Donyo for his ongoing welcome and hospitality at Gyuto Center and for offering us all such delicious, unexpected (!!)  lunches on Saturday and Sunday!   It was also so special to  spend time with the friendly and sincere people who shared in that teachings on those 2 days.   Yes, indeed! There really is so much to “rejoice” in!

(PLUS!….an additional great big rejoice… Ven. Jampa, who most of the quotes in this blog “Reflections from a Friend” are from, ( NOT  the author of the book Easy Path) will be visiting California soon…. what a very happy thought that is! )

This is a kind wish that Kathy received a few years ago…
and one  that’s now hanging as a “suncatcher”
in windows of  her home….

  illuminating a “wish”…

for a balance of ….
relaxation and productivity,

a blossoming of…
happiness,

and the developing of….
a peaceful, steady and stable mind…

And so I pass this wish along to every one of us….
may we nourish and develop all of these qualities

“Life is so generous a giver….” Fra. Giocondo, Christmas Eve, 1513

A selection, below,  from Weekly Quotes, from Linda Graham, Recovering Resilience

~

~

“Fra Giovanni Giocondo (c.1435-1515) was a Renaissance pioneer, accomplished as an architect, engineer, antiquary, archaeologist, classical scholar, and Franciscan friar. Today we remember him most for his reassuring letter to Countess Allagia Aldobrandeschi on Christmas Eve, 1513, a perennial favorite in these weekly quotes.” weekly quotes, Resources for Recovering Resilience, Linda Graham

a photo of some rainbow lights shining on one of the printed pages…
that page was hanging from a lamp, next to a chair I was sitting in…
the light was coming through a crystal, hanging in the south facing window behind me…
a continuing fascination each day,  as I  watch where the rainbow lights light…
ahhhhhh…the joys of watching the meandering path of the rainbow lights,
honoring and appreciating the wisdom of the lighting lights…
ahhhhh….the de-lightful rainbow lights…

The kinder we are with ourselves…the happier we’re going to be…and passing that along to others

~

~

Throughout the  past 4 years, I’ve been kindly and consistently nurtured along with many ideas, particularly the ideas  in this post. (and the entire blog)  I’ve been encouraged to develop the understanding and awareness that nurturing and developing more “happiness” within oneself isn’t “selfish” or “self absorbed”… that nurturing our own happiness can be of tremendous benefit to others, too.  These “perspectives” seemed so surprising to me for such a long time…but now, I’m seeing how “true” and helpful they are.   My sincere thanks to Jampa, for helping me, and all of us who stop by and read his ideas,  realize how important these perspectives are.  I’m still learning…but am progressing along. I hope these ideas might be helpful to others, too.  Warmly, Kathy

~

~

the kinder we are with ourselves, the happier we'll be

~

Ideas from Kathy…based on ideas from Jampa….

Perhaps some of us who tend to be “helpers” or “nurturers” may not be offering as much kindness or compassion to ourselves?  Maybe we’ve “misunderstood” or  misperceived, and think it’s  bit “selfish” or “self absorbed” to be more nurturing or compassionate with ourselves?

Or perhaps we’ve held ourselves up to overly high “standards” or “demands”  for ourselves?…. at times, comparing ourselves unfavorably with others?  seeing where there might be perceived areas of need in ourselves, rather than focusing on areas of strengths? It’s so easy to slip into those less kind points of view…and so potentially harmful for both ourselves and others. Maybe we thought those overly high expectations led to happiness?  I suppose I might have thought that they would. But…they didn’t…and they don’t!

Through the past few years I’ve learned differently!  I’ve observed that the kinder, more nurturing and compassionate I am with myself, the happier I’ve become. And the happier I’ve become,  the more I’ve passed that happiness along to others in my life.

Strangely enough, this increasing of self kindness, self compassion and nurturing my own happiness  (which did not come “naturally”),  has led to more happiness in others, too!  What a wonderful surprise that’s been!
