Set positive intention and motivation to grow as much as you are able to in this coming year

advice set a positive intention and motivation to grow this year

The quote, above,  was from last year, or maybe another previous year.

(written by kathy) I’ve been reflecting, thinking, pondering and creating the pages below over the past few days…to help myself with accessing motivation and direction in the coming days, weeks and months…..but I had forgotten about the quote above until I just noticed it in today’s views in the wordpress dashboard area…what a nice synchronicity.  I hadn’t planned on posting these new pages here on Reflections, but perhaps I will….since they tie in so closely with the ideas in that quote….

This is a kind wish that Kathy received a few years ago…
and one  that’s now hanging as a “suncatcher”
in windows of  her home….

  illuminating a “wish”…

for a balance of ….
relaxation and productivity,

a blossoming of…
happiness,

and the developing of….
a peaceful, steady and stable mind…

And so I pass this wish along to every one of us….
may we nourish and develop all of these qualities

“Patience is a vast subject…” ….learning to nurture and develop more patience

~

~

patience is a vast subject

~

~

ahhhhhhh…. patience…
definitely a vast subject,
and it seems to develop over time.
We might progress in developing patience in some areas
and then “poof…”
“where did it go?”
patience is lacking in another area
I guess I might benefit from developing patience in the expanding practice of  patience?

~

~

When I first met Jampa, one of my “least favorite” words was “patience”… I bristled each time Jampa mentioned that word. Sometimes I wondered if the word was mentioned simply to add irritation…of course,  that wasn’t the reason, but I had such difficulty with patience in some areas that it seemed that way.  Oddly enough, at that time, I worked with children who had challenges and I was extremely patient with them…but in other situations, including with myself…not so much… patience does seem to be a vast subject.

Strangely enough, the top google search term for people arriving at Reflections for a Friend is… “patience”

~

Link to a number of other “Reflections from a Friend” posts with ideas and quotes about patience….(this post appears first, just scroll down through posts)  patience posts on “reflections from a friend”

~

advice patience is needed

~

Below are some ideas I had come up with several years ago…2009….for developing more patience in some of the specific areas on that first card/image.  I use these ideas with myself, but  surprisingly, several 10 year old students also really resonated with many of the ideas.  I’m including the ideas here, in case they might be helpful for anyone else.  (The “phrases” are very basic and simple…maybe even seeming a bit “childish”…. but sometimes in the midst of a reaction, I sometimes feel like a little kid and find simple to be more helpful than longer lines of reasoning.)

Link to larger image  of that chart, in case it’s too small or difficult  to read within this post. “Patience phrases”

Causes lead to effects … past, present, future … from a banana bread perspective

 Cause and effect,
past to present to future
from the perspective of  baking  banana bread

~

~

from Kathy…
I  find it helpful to continue to reflect on “cause and effect”
and the implications of cause-effect in daily life…
realizing that cause-effect dynamic really does exist,
becoming more aware of my own intentions and motivations
learning to restrain more often from doing  “less positive” actions
(not adding  hot pepper sauce to that banana bread dough)
and to make more positive choices
( use good quality ingredients, measure carefully)
ahhh…banana bread….
causes lead to effects
so to choose carefully

~

causes lead to effects wisdom

~

Each loaf of banana bread,
( or any object, thought or feeling )
comes out of dozens, hundreds, thousands of preceding “causes”…
some “causes”  may be more obvious and apparent,
other contributing “causes” might be far more subtle and difficult to realize.

And so to keep this in mind,
not only to become more aware of effects we’re constantly creating,
but to have more awareness and understanding
of how  “effects”  are evolving out of  a multitude of contributing causes,
not separate from those causes ,
an underlying interdependence among them all

decreasing “seeking approval”… going back to our own positive motivation and intention

~

~

positive motivation and intention, instead of seeking "approval"

~

“seeking approval”… sometimes, it seems to be an ongoing challenge in everyday life.  At times, creating and sharing our blog posts might also set off  feelings of wishing for “approval”… ( at least it sometimes has for me  (kathy) )   But it can be an ongoing challenge in ordinary everyday life, too!

~

So….
again and again and again,
learning to go back to one’s own positive motivation and intention in whatever we do,
and being content with that.

~

I’ve received many good ideas for getting past this  “challenge” from Ven. Jampa, and also from other books and websites.  One source with lots of good ideas, the huge website of Ven. Thubten Chondron, a Buddhist nun at Sravasti Abbey, in Washington,  has a list of ideas for “antidotes” for a feeling of need or desire for  “praise.”

I did a copy paste in May of that online list of ideas from Ven. Thubten Chodron’s teachings  and find the ideas helpful.  (I had changed several words in that list, for sharing with several friends who don’t practice Buddhism, so it wasn’t just specific to Dharma/Buddhist practitioners…I think the ideas are potentially helpful for anyone )  I’ve searched and searched, but can’t find that original document in the website, so can’t directly link it in this post.  Here’s a link to part of her website that has many, many good ideas for practicing positive living in daily life. “Ven. Thubten Chodron, Daily Life Dharma”

I’ll share some of those ideas here, in case any of the ideas might be helpful to anybody else.

~

antidotes for "seeking" approval from Thubten Chodron's website

~

~

And so… going back, again and again,
to acting out of our own positive motivation and intention…
“a mind that wishes to be be helpful and positive”
our positive motivation and intention are what counts

~

~

Postive motivation and intentions are what counts

Link to a related previous post on Pocket Perspectives,
with some ideas I’m learning about “Eight Worldly Winds”
(one pair of which is “seeking praise- not wanting blame” )
from my other blog…. Pocket Perspectives….
“Eight Worldly Concerns…developing greater understanding, awareness and balance”

“Eight Worldly Winds” that tend to “drive us”…
and might send our minds into “spins”
seeking pleasure – avoiding pain,
seeking gain – avoiding loss,
seeking praise – avoiding blame,
seeking positive recognition – avoiding disrepute

they’re helpful for me, so I thought I’d share a few of them with others…

Added a few hours later: a photo, below, of a “windspinner” mobile that  I recently made… each section of it  being like a “representation” of one person’s mind… nice and still,  until a bit of breeze or wind comes along…and then…whoosh!… away it goes…spinning around!  Oh, the power of those 8 Worldly Winds to set off spinning!

My purpose in making this was to use this physical representation to help me to see how our minds can spin….and how the minds of those people around us, the other spinners,  start spinning, too!  In addition, I wanted to become more aware of how we might start spinning around, just being next to one of those spinners…or they get spinning around being near our spinning….or all together…. a large, interconnected, interdependent mobile…with the potential for “spinning”  away.

(btw….those spinners do spin, but they don’t seem to spin as much, or as fast,  as others that I’ve made…not the way I “expected” they would. Perhaps I accidentally created “minds” more similar to  monks’ or nuns’ minds???… rather than overly active minds more similar to my own? Perhaps, I created a possibility…the potential in each one of us…. of slowing it all down?…. 🙂    I sure hope so! )

Watching the America’s Cup races, in person and on tv,
has been a really inspiring learning experience for kathy…
watching the level of enthusiasm, persistence, hard work, unbelievable effort, steady motivation…
just keeping going,
no matter what the outcome might or seems to be…
especially Friday’s races…wow!
and then today’s (Sunday’s)  races, too…
wow…talk about persistence and continuing effort…wow!
And…
impermanence, changing nature in life…
things not being the way they appear…
loosening up in life…
wow!

6/27/13 Why worry? …. “If we have a problem and …..” advice from Shantideva, 8th Century

~

~

Shantideva why worry

~

~
Some “wisdom” Kathy is trying to keep in mind right now…

During “in-between times”….
when there may be a possible “problem” developing,
but not yet happening or certain…
to recognize and remember this  wisdom,
originally from Shantideva, in the 8th century,
rephrased by Jampa
“If we have a problem and can’t fix it, then worry solves nothing.
If we have a problem that can be fixed, why worry?”
~

~
And if we are in that period of time when we “don’t know” or are “uncertain,”
that “in-between” period,
to develop and use patience
and NOT  create imagined hypothetical scenarios or worries,
to rest calmly and steadily
during those periods of uncertainty

~
(now THAT  is ambitious, at least for some of us!
positive and helpful, but ambitious!)
