“The Dalai Lama is turning 80 years old on July 6, but he doesn’t want any gifts. Instead, your social media presence is the present.

In honor of his milestone birthday, His Holiness is asking people to share photos, videos and quotes depicting people simply treating one another kindly, along with the hashtag #withcompassion on social accounts.”  (from Huffington Post )

“Patience is a vast subject…” ….learning to nurture and develop more patience

~

~

patience is a vast subject

~

~

ahhhhhhh…. patience…
definitely a vast subject,
and it seems to develop over time.
We might progress in developing patience in some areas
and then “poof…”
“where did it go?”
patience is lacking in another area
I guess I might benefit from developing patience in the expanding practice of  patience?

~

~

When I first met Jampa, one of my “least favorite” words was “patience”… I bristled each time Jampa mentioned that word. Sometimes I wondered if the word was mentioned simply to add irritation…of course,  that wasn’t the reason, but I had such difficulty with patience in some areas that it seemed that way.  Oddly enough, at that time, I worked with children who had challenges and I was extremely patient with them…but in other situations, including with myself…not so much… patience does seem to be a vast subject.

Strangely enough, the top google search term for people arriving at Reflections for a Friend is… “patience”

Below are some ideas I had come up with several years ago…2009….for developing more patience in some of the specific areas on that first card/image.  I use these ideas with myself, but  surprisingly, several 10 year old students also really resonated with many of the ideas.  I’m including the ideas here, in case they might be helpful for anyone else.  (The “phrases” are very basic and simple…maybe even seeming a bit “childish”…. but sometimes in the midst of a reaction, I sometimes feel like a little kid and find simple to be more helpful than longer lines of reasoning.)

Today’s related post on Pocket Perspectives: DalaiLama quote and “Make haste to be kind”

The kinder we are with ourselves…the happier we’re going to be…and passing that along to others

~

~

Throughout the  past 4 years, I’ve been kindly and consistently nurtured along with many ideas, particularly the ideas  in this post. (and the entire blog)  I’ve been encouraged to develop the understanding and awareness that nurturing and developing more “happiness” within oneself isn’t “selfish” or “self absorbed”… that nurturing our own happiness can be of tremendous benefit to others, too.  These “perspectives” seemed so surprising to me for such a long time…but now, I’m seeing how “true” and helpful they are.   My sincere thanks to Jampa, for helping me, and all of us who stop by and read his ideas,  realize how important these perspectives are.  I’m still learning…but am progressing along. I hope these ideas might be helpful to others, too.  Warmly, Kathy

the kinder we are with ourselves, the happier we'll be

~

Ideas from Kathy…based on ideas from Jampa….

Perhaps some of us who tend to be “helpers” or “nurturers” may not be offering as much kindness or compassion to ourselves?  Maybe we’ve “misunderstood” or  misperceived, and think it’s  bit “selfish” or “self absorbed” to be more nurturing or compassionate with ourselves?

Or perhaps we’ve held ourselves up to overly high “standards” or “demands”  for ourselves?…. at times, comparing ourselves unfavorably with others?  seeing where there might be perceived areas of need in ourselves, rather than focusing on areas of strengths? It’s so easy to slip into those less kind points of view…and so potentially harmful for both ourselves and others. Maybe we thought those overly high expectations led to happiness?  I suppose I might have thought that they would. But…they didn’t…and they don’t!

Through the past few years I’ve learned differently!  I’ve observed that the kinder, more nurturing and compassionate I am with myself, the happier I’ve become. And the happier I’ve become,  the more I’ve passed that happiness along to others in my life.

Strangely enough, this increasing of self kindness, self compassion and nurturing my own happiness  (which did not come “naturally”),  has led to more happiness in others, too!  What a wonderful surprise that’s been!

Many people have been arriving at “Reflections from a Friend” in the past few days, through several kindness quotes from The DalaiLama . For those not familiar with this site, many of the posts within the site are bits of wisdom, insight and advice received from Ven. Jampa Choepal, a Buddhist monk who took his monk’s vows from The DalaiLama and considers The DalaiLama to be a true inspiration and one of his main teachers.

Ven. Jampa lives at a small monastery in Australia. Ven. Jampa has been a kind, encouraging and nurturing friend to Kathy
(PocketPerspectives) for the past 4 years.

Because it seems kind to do so, Kathy shares ideas from Jampa with others, through this blog.   Jampa is supportive of this advice being shared with others….which of course makes sense since he is a very kind, generous and encouraging person. (He’s also funny, enthusiastic and dynamic…quite a combination)

A wish from Kathy: May we all develop and carry happiness, kindness and peace in each of our own hearts and share those freely and generously with others in our lives.
